Consultations, Workshops, & Classes

In 2022, ECDS achieved significant milestones in digital pedagogies and technologies. The Center conducted 1536 consultations, catering to full-time faculty, staff, and graduate trainees, with an increase in data-based analysis and GIS mapping consultations. Additionally, ECDS hosted nine workshops on diverse topics, attracting 195 participants and accumulating nearly 10,000 page views. The Digital Scholarship Training Program (DSTP) offered paid training to Emory graduate students from various disciplines, preparing them for successful careers within and beyond academia.

02

Projects and Platforms

ECDS continued to maintain and innovate on over 10 flagship projects and platforms that promote open access, digital pedagogy, and data-driven research and learning. The OpenTour Builder team released updates to improve geospatial tours, including new media types and language support. ECDS collaborated with Yonsei University in Seoul to enhance the OpenWorld Atlanta website UI design. Readux expanded its collection of rare works of early Black print culture, while Sounding Spirit digitized sacred vernacular songbooks for an upcoming digital library launch. ECDS partnered with Sonal Nalkur for interactive modules on relationships and assisted the Post45 Data Collective in publishing new data sets. Other projects included American Excavations Samothrace, Beckett Letters, and the Georgia Coast Atlas.

03

Journal Publishing

Among the journal publishing platforms and projects that ECDS led and supported, JHR achieved being the first journal exploring humanities and rehabilitation sciences, promoting humanism in health care and education. In 2022, they shifted to a rolling publication model, providing timely articles and responsive features. Sacred Matters redesigned its magazine, focusing on thematic articles and highlighting diverse sacred topics. Southern Spaces attracted over 200,000 unique visitors, publishing impactful peer-reviewed articles and multimedia content. JSPE, an undergraduate journal, showcased interdisciplinary works and creativity in addressing political concepts. ATL Studies united institutions, publishing valuable scholarship and hosting an engaging symposium on Atlanta's past and future.

04

Media Productions

ECDS achieved significant milestones across various media-driven projects. We partnered with academics and institutions to create educational games like "Sailing with the Gods" and digitally reconstruct historical sites like the Sanctuary of the Great Gods in Samothrace. We  commemorated the 50th anniversary of Apollo 15 through a virtual exhibit and preserved ancient Rome's Baroque city with a 3D walkable reconstruction. Our efforts also extended to supporting training and education with instructional videos, including vaccine administration and the ORCID ID initiative, while exploring historical events through accurate 3D modeling.

05

Monograph Publishing

ECDS continued the collaboration with the Fox Center for Humanistic Inquiry on digital publishing initiatives, assisting authors with projects using the open-access publishing platforms, Manifold and Quire. We provided design consultation and workshops to help authors implement their digital publishing projects. Projects like "Through a Glass Darkly," "Luxury Silver," and "And I Must Scream" were made possible through this collaborative effort. "Luxury Silver" utilized RTI technology to enhance the digital experience of viewing silver objects on iPad devices.

06

Partnerships

ECDS collaborated with Yonsei University on the OpenWorld Atlanta (OWA) project, providing public access to historical information through interactive 3D interfaces. The Graduate Community of Digital Scholars (GCDS) program, a joint initiative with the Fox Center for Humanistic Inquiry, offers support, training, and funding to students developing digital dissertations. ECDS partnered with the Halle Institute for Global Research, supporting global research through fellowships and resources. Additionally, ECDS collaborated with Science Gallery International on the exhibition "Hooked," contributing the video "Plant Teachers" examining the significance of psychedelic compounds in Indigenous cultures' religious practices.

07

Race, Equity, and Social Justice

As interest in digital pedagogies and technologies in the classroom continued to rise in 2022, ECDS saw a total number of 1536 consultations conducted by full-time faculty and staff, graduate trainees, and graduate fellows. Whether one-on-one or in a group, scheduled or walk-ins, the Center’s team advises on digital projects or problems with the technologies they specialize in. Specifically, Rob O’Reilly and Megan Slemons saw an uptick in the frequency of data-based analysis and GIS (geographic information systems) mapping consultations.
