ATL Studies

The Atlanta Studies project consists of a network, a peer-reviewed journal and blog, a meetup series, and an annual symposium that draw together cultural, non-profit, and academic institutions across the city, including but not limited to Emory University, Georgia Tech, Georgia State University, Kennesaw State University, Clark Atlanta and the Atlanta University Center, the Center for Civil and Human Rights, The New Georgia Encyclopedia, StoryCorps, and others.

In 2022, the journal continued its work publishing scholarship about the varied pasts and possible futures of Atlanta. Publications this year included scholarship on new technologies for navigating city history, such as Joanna Mundy’s, “OpenTour Builder: an open source platform for highlighting Atlanta stories in the lived environment of the city,” an excerpt on equitable city planning by Dan Immergluck, “Gentrification and the Subsidizing City,” Eric Solomon’s contextualization and exploration of the growth of LGBTQ+ political power in Atlanta, “Once Upon a Time in Atlanta: Staging Revolution from the Gay Bar,” David S. Bennett’s “Exposing White Supremacy in Print: A Review of Journalism and Jim Crow,” and Elora Raymond’s timely, “Large Corporate Investors purchase thousands of Atlanta Single-Family Homes during the Pandemic.”

The Atlanta Studies Journal continues to grow, as illustrated by the visit count averaging 1,500 visitors a month through 2022. The Atlanta Studies symposium series was held in person for the first time since 2019, the symposium this year drew together a group of 180 registrants to hear a collection of 46 talks, roundtables, films, and posters by scholars, researchers, and practitioners from across the country.  The Organizing Committee represented Georgia State University, Georgia Tech, Emory University, the AUC, and Kennesaw State University, and was led by Katherine Hankins, Professor and Chair of Geosciences at GSU.  The event was hosted by GSU, with support from the members of the Atlanta Studies Network along with ECDS, the Fox Center for Humanistic Inquiry, the Emory Writing Program, and others.
